Day 1 – First visit to Black Lion Hospital
Day 1
I arrived in Addis Ababa early in the morning, and after a
brief nap at the hotel, I took a taxi to Black Lion Hospital in order to meet with
the department chair. I realized as soon as the taxi arrived at the gate that
the hospital compound was huge, and there was no way of finding the radiology
department without asking multiple people for help. I wandered into an outdoor
courtyard in the middle of the ED building. Patients and families were laying
in the hallways of the courtyard on sprawling blankets, each person with an anxious
sadness printed on their faces. Out of the corner of my eye, I saw a sign for
“xray.” A lady sitting behind a door with metal bars looked up and seemed to
take pity on me, knowing that I would never find the radiology department on my
own. She locked up her office and walked me to the radiology office.
The chair, Dr. Alwan, was very
welcoming and gave me a tour of
the department. We discussed the goals of my trip, including my schedule for
resident lectures and the plan for my colleague, Issack to provide lectures to
the technologists. We had a long discussion about the current workflow in the
department and the pros/cons of the current system. I took many notes.
I decided to walk part of the way back to the hotel. The
area surrounding the hospital was tragic. Numerous people were laying in the
street, emaciated and listless, looking up only to plead for food or change. A
little boy approached me, asking me to buy his tissues. I gave him 5 birr (18
cents US), which made him very happy. I realized suddenly that I didn’t
actually need tissues and offered to return them, so that he could resell them
to someone else. He looked at me, shook his head and ran away with his 5 birr.
When I arrived back at home, I emailed my mentor Melissa
Culp (RadAid, Chief Operating Officer) to update her on my plan.
